Valley Oak Montessori Preschool

An education built around how children actually learn

We've taken the best of guided curriculum and Montessori philosophy and blended them into one approach — grounded in a hundred years of developmental science, and built for the needs of a 21st-century child.

Our well-rounded program helps children become more engaged, gain independence, and develop a genuine love of learning. By focusing on each child's individual needs, our trained teachers use these critical early years to set every child on a path toward a lifetime of happiness and success.

"The compassionate, articulate, intellectually curious graduate — that's the product of our program parents notice most."

Parents are drawn in by the small class sizes, the close teacher relationships built over a three-year cycle, and the way children plan their own learning pace, manage the weather station, and lead morning circle. What keeps them here is what that process produces.

How we achieve this

Seven design choices that shape every classroom at Valley Oak.

A prepared environment

The classroom itself sets the stage for each level's developmental curriculum to unfold naturally.

Self-directed learning

Individual and small-group work builds ownership — a balance of personal mastery and collaboration.

Purposeful activity

Rigor calibrated to the child, with learning valued for its own sake — about themselves, their world, their impact.

Multi-age classrooms

Children spend a three-year cycle together, ages 1–3 and 3–6, learning from and mentoring one another.

Credentialed teachers

Montessori-trained educators apply an integrated, developmental approach using the full method.

Full Montessori materials

Every classroom is equipped to foster intellectual, creative, physical, and social independence.

Uninterrupted work time

Long, protected blocks for problem-solving and connecting ideas — the space real thinking needs.

Year one Year two Year three

The three-year cycle

Each classroom holds the same mixed-age community for three years. Younger children learn by watching; older children deepen their own understanding by teaching. Nobody repeats a grade — the cycle simply continues.

Valley Oak Method vs. home-based day care

Both can be loving environments. Here's how the day-to-day experience tends to differ.

Valley Oak Method Typical home day care
Curriculum A blended, developmentally sequenced Montessori curriculum, delivered with today's learning tools. Often informal or activity-based, without a structured developmental sequence.
Teachers Montessori-credentialed teachers trained in the specific method and materials. Caregivers with general childcare experience; formal pedagogical training varies widely.
Environment A purpose-built, prepared classroom with a full complement of Montessori materials. A home setting, generally not designed around a specific pedagogical method.
Age grouping Intentional multi-age cohorts on a three-year cycle (1–3, 3–6), designed for peer mentorship. Mixed ages by necessity of enrollment, without a structured mentorship model.
Independence Children plan their own pace, lead circle time, and take on real responsibilities like the weather station. Daily structure is typically set and led by the caregiver.
Work time Long, uninterrupted blocks for deep, self-directed work. Schedules often built around shorter activity blocks and transitions.
Continuity The same classroom community and teaching approach across a full three-year cycle. Can offer strong one-on-one continuity, though without a formal developmental progression.

Come see it for yourself

The best way to understand the difference is to spend twenty minutes in one of our classrooms.
